Oath of Office during the Inauguration
Saturday, January 10, 2009
We must have freedom of Speech, or this blog wouldn't exist. Freedom of religion, or our children would not be allowed to pray in school. A long standing tradition during the inauguration is the 35-word oath of office. "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
Barack Obama wants to add the phrase 'so help me God' at the end of his oath. But there are groups that are suing in federal court in an attempt to block any mention of God in the ceremonies. I believe that it is everyone's right to choose whether or not they can pray or not or mention 'God' in public. I also believe that non-believers do not have the right to impose on people who do believe in God.
I do not for one moment believe that anyone will stop Obama from mentioning 'so help me God'. It has been done in the past with many Presidents, and continues to be an option.
