Guantanamo Bay Prison looks to be Closed Very Soon
Monday, January 12, 2009
As promised by Barack Obama, it does appear that he will sign legislation to close Guantanamo Bay prison. But before he does, he wants legal framework to be in place to handle the existing 500+ inmates, and how to handle other detainees in the future. This legislation should take place within his first week in office. This information has been supplied from a few members of his transition team. This was also the wish of the past Republican Presidential candidate John McCain. Obama is looking for other ways to swiftly prosecute terrorists. So far in the post-election season prior to the inauguration, Obama seems to be serious in keeping his word. Obama is aware that it may not be the best thing then to just turn these people loose. There will have to be a plan to handle these inmates. It is unsure that the answer may be to bring these terrorists to American soil and house them in the local prisons. But regardless of where they say, there will be a substantial savings on not having the facilites in Cuba. One of the reasons to close the facility in Cuba is to silence critics that believe that Guantanamo Bay is an overreach of the war on terror and another symbol of mismanagement by Bush.
President Bush had his final press conference today, and backed his past decisions regarding Guantanamo Bay prison.
