Is Obama Breaking His Own Word Concerning Openness and Lobbyists?
Saturday, January 24, 2009
Stated by President Obama just a few days ago, he will promote a new state of openness, and that would begin with transparency. One issue that may turn into a real issue for Obama is his campaign stance on lobbyists. He is very critical of them and now he plans to sign an executive order on ethics, which will represent vast changes for lobbyists, as they will be subject to stricter limits.
After the executive order is implemented, as a lobbyist in the new administration, Obama claims "you will not be able to work on matters that you lobbied on, or in the agencies you lobbied during the previous two years. When you leave government, you will not be able to lobby my administration for as long as I am president."
He said this just a few days ago, but what is surfacing today can very well be what you would call a double standard, to protect his own interests. Now, he wants to circumvent his own rule. In a specific issue, President Obama wants to hire a former lobbyist named William Lynn for a big defense contractor called Raytheon. The President wants to hire him even if he was a lobbyist, then wanting an exception to his own rule. So it appears that the bill will put very stringent restrictions on lobbyists, but may not apply to Obama. If the President wants complete transparency, then maybe he should set the example and try to abide by his own rules, otherwise don't create the rules. Sounds like a double standard to me. It will be interesting to observe the outcome of this issue along with the debates that will be generated that note the double standard here.
