Gun Control - Will there Ever by Laws Passed by Congress to Protect the People from Themselves?
Tuesday, January 11, 2011
President Obama led the nation today in a moment of silence in respect to the tragedy that occurred in Tucson , Arizona , believed to be the saddest city in America today. Because of the tragedy, there has been renewed interest in Arizona especially for stricter gun control. But with the Republican led House, it is likely that any new gun law would not be enacted nationally, as the Republicans favor gun freedoms. This obvious freedom that we have, has condemned our safety for civilians in the country. It is true that we have the right to defend ourselves, and we should have some right to bear arms, but there must be a fail-safe way for someone who should not purchase a weapon to not purchase one. The lone-gunman did purchase his murder weapon and clips for it legally, which poses the question whether the check procedure to purchase such a weapon needs to be changed. The rules to purchase a gun in Arizona have been listed in a prior article on this website. Obviously, the shooter should have never been sold the gun, and there were not enough checks in place to recognize that this buyer should not be able to purchase a weapon. How many times must a tragedy like this happen before the conservatives concede for more gun control?
People roam the country free to purchase weapons and use them on helpless individuals. Yes, people should have a right to purchase a weapon, but in a country that is supposed to be free and safe as the United States is supposed to be, is not free and safe basically because of the same reason. The control of weapons cannot be accomplished if there is no absolute way in determining a proper purchase for any weapon, to include guns and knives, and any type of explosive.
From Presidents to children, the tally continues to grow of peoples lives that were lost unnecessarily because we still haven't found a way to protect ourselves from the very guns we by to protect ourselves. That is an irony that this country should be embarrassed to still hold true in today’s society.
