Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords |
Today, on the brink of sweeping cold to attack the South, an even colder attack of a Democratic Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, was shot in the head by an assassin. The shooter, a man by the name of Jared Lee Loughner, age 22, killed 6 people, including federal judge John Roll who served on the bench for over 40 years, and a 9-year old girl in Tuscon, Arizona today. The Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, is still alive after the gunman's bullet traveled through her brain and exited on the other side. Even with this serious injury to her brain, the doctors claim that she is alert and responds to questions and commands. But it is still early and too soon to tell if the Congresswoman will survive the brain injury. Chances are that the brain may swell, and can cause other complications. It is not know what the complete damage is to her brain, as it will take a while before that can be determined.
President Barack Obama addressed the tragic shooting in Tucson, Arizona on Saturday in which Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head and a number of others were hurt or killed following the incident.
"Gabby Giffords was a friend of mine," said Obama during a televised news conference. "She is not only an extraordinary public servant, but she is also somebody who is warm and caring. She is well-liked by her colleagues and well-liked by her constituents."
The president added, "I know Gabby is as tough as they come and I am hopeful that she is going to pull through... Our hearts go out to the family members of those who have been slain."
