Gene Sperling |
With the shakeup in Congress with the newly elected Republicans in the House, President Obama wasted no time this New Year to name Washington veteran Gene Sperling to his new staff in the top economic post in his National Economic Council (NEC). As director, he will have the task of leading the way to lower unemployement. Already at a 2 year low, unemployment is now setting at 9.4 percent and dropping. But President Obama expected more growth as far as employement. So Gene Sperling has a very big task to fulfill, as Obama says "Our mission has to be to accelerate hiring and accelerate growth." So now he will have first hand knowledge of President Obama's Economic policies. He replaces Lawrence Summers, who is returning to a Harvard University professorship.
The formal announcement of the hiring will be made tomorrow when President Obama visits Thompson Creek Manufacturing in Landover, MD. The President is also expected to comment on employment. Mr. Sperling will help determine the administration's economic policy for at least the final two years of Obama's first term. More details of Sperlings bi-partisan role will be forthcoming.
