Troop Witdrawal Moved from 16 months to 19 months - Obama's First Broken Campaign Promise
Thursday, February 26, 2009
In a move by Obama to leak out the fact that troops will stay in Iraq a few months more than promised in his campaign was highly calculated. Knowing that the eyes and ears and critics were going to focus on his speech to the Congress and the nation, President Obama made it known that he was not going to be able to keep his promise on withdrawing troops in just 16 months of taking office. Prior to stepping down from the Presidency, President Bush made an agreement with the Iraqi government that all troops have to be out of Iraq by December 31, 2011. President Obama meanwhile will keep the troops in Iraq 90 days longer than he had promised originally, by August 2010. This will give the commanders in Iraq a little bit longer to organize and properly pull out gracefully. Even though President Obama has given the commanders this extra time, I'm hoping that Iraq knows that President plans to pull out the troops way before December 31, 2010. He will reiterate his decisions to troops at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina on Friday. This visit will be the first in his presidency to a military base.
Some of the Democrats or liberals are disappointed that President Obama is not keeping one of his promises in the campaign, but on the other hand, Republicans or conservatives must be happy of the announcement. Even after the fact, President Obama plans to leave somewhere between 25,000 and 50,000 troops there on a non-combative mission to assist the Iraq government without military assistance. This should prove interesting, as violence most likely will break out, but Obama is determined by that time to let the Iraq government handle their own problems. But at the same time, President Obama is trying to keep the right balance between just ending the war with maintaining stability in Iraq.
According to Rep. John Hugh, Obama has what is called 'Plan B' just in case things deteriorate in Iraq and forces cannot leave on time. Only one could speculate what that may be. Whatever it is, he is determined to remove combative troops from Iraq in 19 months.
