The 'Fairness Doctrine' - may come back?

Tuesday, February 17, 2009

Often, I find myself listening to conservative radio, as I enjoy listening to talk shows while driving, but I've always wondered, where are the liberal stations, those who support our President and his policies. I'd like to develop a well-rounded opinion on the political issues, as I try to convey what I read and what I hear into information presented in this blog.
All day long, you can hear commentary on WBAP radio 820AM in Dallas Texas starting with the Mark Davis show at 8:30AM, Rush Limbaugh at 11:00AM, Sean Hannity at 2:00PM, Mark Levin at 5:00PM and Laura Ingraham at 8:00PM. What you will hear is constant slamming of our President and everything he stands for. Yes, we do have the freedom of speech, but just how far equals too far. You will hear some of the most 'far right' thinking on the planet right there on talk radio WBAP AM.
This brings up another point. Where is the balance. According to President Clinton, "government should either bring back the "Fairness Doctrine" or have more programs that present the other side". He says, "Because essentially there’s always been a lot of big money to support the right wing talk shows and let’s face it… Rush Limbaugh is fairly entertaining even when he is saying things that I think are ridiculous,” said the former president.
The FCC found that the Fairness Doctrine was unconstitutional in 1987, which required broadcasters to air both sides of controversial topics such as politics or the President. The Democrats tried to bring the Fairness Doctrine back, but the Republican President Ronald Reagan vetoed the effort.
So now may be the time for  President Obama to re-think the idea of bringing back the 'fairness doctrine'.  Look out Rush Limbaugh.. You might have to share your "broadcast excellence" on WBAP  with me while listening to Liberalism 101 on WBAP. By the way, it wouldn't cost a penny to listen to my broadcasts on the internet.
