The GOP verison of The Economic Stimulus Plan
Tuesday, February 3, 2009
The GOP Senators now have drafted their own economic stimulus alternative, in an effort to show the President that there are serious differences between the Presidents draft compared to the Republican draft. So now would be the time to combine the ideas between both stimulus drafts, and come up with a final draft that the House would approve and the President would sign.
So why are the Republic Congressmen not in tune with Obama's plan? Here are a few of what the House Republican leaders call "wasteful" provisions. As the Republicans list at least 30 provisions, here are the ones that most come to light....
• A $246 million tax break for Hollywood movie producers to buy motion pictures
• $650 million for the digital television (DTV) converter box coupon program
• $248 million for furniture at the new Department of Homeland Security headquarters
• $600 million to buy hybrid vehicles for federal employees
• $1 billion for the 2010 Census
So is this really the kind of bill that the Senate should be passing? I guess this question is kind of late because they have already passed the bill. It sounds like the Senators just pushed that bill right through. The Republican members will not be fooled though. When the bill passed in the Senate, it passed without the help of even one Republican vote. It will not be as easy in the House.
Regardless of the outcome, President Obama claims that both parties need to work together so that the bill can be passed quickly. He also feels confident that the House and Senate will come into a common agreement so that the bill can be presented to President Obama hopefully by the end of this week.
