Republican Governors say they will Refuse Economic Stimulus Money for Their State
Monday, February 23, 2009
In bizarre statements, Republican governors Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, Mark Sanford of South Carolina, Sarah Palin of Alaska and governors of Idaho, Mississippi and Texas have outwardly stated that they did not want any part of the economic stimulus money that would be on the way. Even if it would affect their state in a negative way, they would rather refuse money due them.
At least not all the Republican senators think that way. Recently, two senators have responded to the senators that do not want the financial help. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand asked President Obama in a letter asking him to direct stimulus money turned down by other states to their state.
"New York receives 78 cents from the federal government for every dollar we send to Washington. If other states are willingly refusing federal support in this time of economic crisis, New York should benefit given our “donor state” status.…"
"If any governor — Democrat or Republican — leaves stimulus money on the table, then we respectfully request that funds be distributed to New York. We will put the money to good use, investing in education and new infrastructure, such as health care IT and high speed rail."
It's not every day that the Federal Government would be willing to help the Governors with these vast amounts of money destined to help the people overcome the economic issues facing everyone today. But these few Republican Governors and Senators have taken it upon themselves to voice their wishes as those of their constituants, the people that they serve, not taking in consideration what everyone may want. The governors should not have that right.
