Obama "Screwed Up" by nominating Tom Dasche as Health Secretary
Thursday, February 5, 2009
As Obama has stated throughout the campaign, and even in his inauguration speech, he will 'screw up' from time to time as President. In a statement after Senator Tom Daschle resigned from his nomination by Obama, he states "I've got to own up to my mistake. Ultimately, it's important for this administration to send a message that there aren't two sets of rules - you know, one for prominent people and one for ordinary folks who have to pay their taxes."
President Obama interviewed on NBC's "Nightly News with Brian Williams." Even after he was "absolutely" committed to Daschle's confirmation as secretary of health and human service, which would have given him the power to lead in the president's ambitions plans to fix the health care system, President Obama admitted to the mistake.
Ultimately, Senator Tom Daschle resigned from seeking the nomination because of pressure from the media and the conservative party were turning on the heat, in light of what was becoming public knowledge with the investigation. In the interview, President Obama expressed frustration with himself and with his team, partly responsible for choosing a candidate for a high ranking position in government.
In a day of some fairly hugh disappointments for President Obama, along with Daschle asking to be removed from consideration as Health Secretary, Nancy Killefer also made a request to be removed from consideration as 'Chief Performance Officer'. So there are at least two major posts to fill at this time, but I'm sure that President Obama may even have replacement candidates chosen at this time.
So what has been the culprit with these nominations that failed? Regarding all who had to step down, it is about one thing... 'TAXES' Either they had evaded their taxes in the past, or simply refused to pay.
As President Obama stated, "Today was an embarrassment for us," as he mentioned that statement of NBC. He claimed he was definitely "angry,""disappointed" and "frustrated with myself" over the Daschle episode.
