Obama's plan to cut the budget by $17 billion - just a start

Thursday, May 7, 2009

You rarely hear that President Obama is doing something to reduce the budget, but actually yesterday his Congress proposed to cut the budget by $17 billion. So what does Obama plan to take away. In a nutshell, he plans on reducing funding for more than 100 federal programs in the 2010 budget. Even prior to him gaining the office of the Presidency, he promised that he would take apart every unnecessary expenditure that the Federal government was making. Accord to him there is allot of fat setting around in the federal government in the form of 121 federal programs . Part of the savings would just be discretionary, meaning that half of the funds derived from programs that would have to be renewed would not be renewed. The other would come from non-defense programs.
As President Obama's cabinet picks apart some of the expenditures, an official says "In many cases we have multiple programs that do the same things," and "Duplication can be the enemy of efficiency."
Other programs planned to be cut are as follows:
    * A long-range navigation system now made obsolete by the GPS. Cost: $35 million.
    * An early education program called Even Start, the performance of which had been poor.     Cost: $66 million.
    * A Department of Education attaché position in Paris. Cost: $632,000.
    * The Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation, which only pays out 20% of its funds in awards every year. Cost: $1 million.
    * A program that pays states to clean out abandoned mines even after the mines have been cleaned out. Cost: $142 million.
Now, you will hear more and more talk of cutting the deficit, as Obama has pretty well exhausted his ability now to spend money as he wishes. Yes, it is true that he still has the power to do so, but if he keeps spending money as he has during his first 100 days in office, it would be especially hard to reduce the deficit as he plans to, even with all of the planned cuts to happen to bring down the deficit.
All excess spending must come to an immediate halt, as according to the Government Accountability Office, it is now estimated that all federal revenue will be going towards government costs, including Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and public debt interest by the year 2025. Another big chunk of money is supposed to be saved from curbing the growth in health care costs.
