Saturday, May 9, 2009
Winning a landslide victory on Wednesday, Jacob Zuma was inaugurated as president of South Africa. There were large crowds of people to watch the ceremony at the president's residence at 'Union Buildings' shown at the right. The popular party that won 66 percent of the vote is known as the African National Congress party. President Zuma, now stands among some of his predecessors Nelson Mandela and Thabo Mbeki. Mandela was present to watch the event. But the election didn't go so cleanly as the American election of Barack Obama. The African National Congress party (ANC), has been accused of corruption and failing to deliver services to the poor. President Zuma was actually charged of corruption but the accusations were dropped 2 weeks before the election. But nevertheless, he was sworn in as South Africa's president.
