Michelle Obama gave her first commencement speech as first lady at the University of California Merced after graduating students launched an innovative campaign to book Mrs. Obama as their graduation speaker. It was a dream that came true for the graduating students, the first graduating class ever at the new campus. She gave them words of wisdom, as now they can brag "Yes we did" as they were successful in acquiring Michelle Obama as their graduating speaker. The students put together a video "We believe in the American Dream" and why they wanted Michelle Obama as their speaker at graduation. It was the notion of being first. Michelle qualifies to speak, not only as the first lady at their commencement, but she is the FIRST African American first lady, married the the very first African American President. Now the students at this campus have the proud honor of hosting the very first African American First lady at their first commencement, the very first in the 21st century. The students worked hard to get her there, but actually it didn't take much swaying to get Michelle Obama to attend. The only issue may have been with her schedule in conjunction with her Presidential husband Barack Obama. Immediately below are her words of wisdom, her speech to the graduating class of 2009, the first from Merced.
Next year, Merced may be working on having President Obama at their commencement speech. This year, President Obama spoke at the University of Notre Dame Commencement speech, his first as President, as he became an honorary graduate, while also giving a wonderful speech, also immediately below.
