Blagojevich appoints Burris in a bold-premeditated move

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

In a bold - premeditated move today, Governor Blagojevich appointed Roland Burris as Obama's successor in the Senate.

President-Elect Barack Obama has formally stated his disapproval of the decision of Illinois Governor Blagojevich to name Roland Burris to fill his Senate seat that was vacated since he has become President-Elect. He claims that Governor Blagojevich has completely ignored his warnings, as Obama has agreed with Senate leaders that Burris will be blocked from the appointment. Obama is again urging the Governor to step down. He has essentially become a lame-duck governor, and eventually will be stripped of the Governorship, as he faces possible impeachment by February.
Unfortunately, if the Senate Democratic leaders block the appointment and do no resolve this issue within a week, the new year will start with one less Democratic Representative in the Senate. Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White claims that the Burris' appointment will not be certified. The Senate does not have to approve of the appointment by Blagojevich, but if there are questions, and most surely there will be, the seat can be vacated by the Senate.
A reaction by Representative Bobby Rush warns other senators that they should not block the appointment, mainly because there are no African-Americans in the U.S. Senate. This is a case where the color of a mans skin might be the reason why he may be allowed to fill the Senate seat.
Burris, a former Attorney General, who is not one of the six people who were originally considered to fill Obama's Senate seat, claims that his appointment by Blagojevich is not about race, but it seems clear to me that the Governor has chosen Burris to make it as difficult as possible for the Senate to overturn his decision.
President-Elect Barack Obama has stated his wishes on this, and hopefully he will be a little more forceful in this matter, communicate with Blagojevich and directly state to the Governor that he disapproves of his appointment. Is he bold enough to actually tell the President-Elect that he will not do what he wishes? It appears to me that only Barack Obama can resolve this issue in a speedily manner.
The American people must understand the situation, and how it was masterminded by a Governor that has been arrested and surely will be impeached if he doesn't step down from office.
