Midterm Elections are all but Over - Republicans Overtake the House
Tuesday, November 2, 2010
What can be termed as a landslide victory, the Republicans have gained at least 60 seats in the House, but most likely by this time tonight, will not take control of the Senate. Tea Party candidates Rand Paul and Marco Rubio win their bid for election.
In a nutshell, the Republicans have done very well, and the Democrats have suffered a major loss in the Senate. The results are not surprising to either side. This basically means that the Congress will be considered 'Lame Duck' at least until the new Congress takes session in 2011. Nancy Pelosi will now step down as Speaker and John Boehner who was the Minority Speaker, now becomes the majority speaker. He will also appoint some new key positions that should help Republicans promote Republican policies. Now it is the Republicans turn to see how difficult it can be to try and promote policy when the Senate most likely will not agree, not to mention they may have to convince a Democratic President from time to time. Expect to see President Obama use his 'veto' powers.
There are several interesting races up for grabs this evening. Tomorrow, President Obama will make public statements regarding the elections of 2010, and also should state what loosing the House means to him. Immediately after the elections, the political focus will change immediately to President Obama. President Obama has stated that he will continue to promote ideas on what elected him in the first place, but most likely will be more willing to work with Republicans to at least agree on different legislation.
