Children in the White House - Now a Public Life

75 Days until Inauguration Day - January 20, 2009

Most everyone expects that they know what is in store for the President of the United States and the first lady when they move to the White House, but what is it like for the children of the President. Barack Obama's daughters will live a public life with their parents. Everything they say or do can be and will be made public if the media gets wind of it. But it's kind of neat living there. Not only do you live in a place that would be the largest house that you live in, but try to imagine living in a place that has a swimming pool, a bowling alley and a movie theater all built in. Wow. Now that's a real pad to live in. As soon as the girls Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, move in, they will be under the watchful eye of the secret service. Actually the girls will have their own secret service besides the media. Everything they say and do can be and would be noted by the media. Previous presidents children used to do things like most children love to do. For example, Theodore Roosevelt's children liked water balloons and dropped them on foreign dignitaries. How about their pet snake in the dining room. John F. Kennedy's child used to hide in the oval office desk. His sister Caroline had a pony on the White House grounds. President Lincoln's youngest son Thomas was fascinated with bells and he used to scare everyone in the building when he was able to make all the White House bells ring at once. John Quincy Adams had problems with alcohol and addiction. Of course, most if not all of their children's experiences in the White House will be under direct scrutiny of their mother Michelle, who vows to be very active in their lives. She claims that being a mother to her children is first, then being first lady is second. A thing you may not have known about their mother is that Michelle is also a soccer mom and frequently went to the games to cheer her daughters on. The idea of a private school or public school is still up in the air. Everything they do, especially if they go to a public school, grades and activies that both Sasha and Malia will be known.

1st News Conference by Barack Obama as President - Elect

74 Days until Inauguration Day - January 20, 2009


Barack Obama had his first news conference as president-elect, centering around the economy. He claims that the country is facing the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime and "we're going to have to act swiftly to resolve it." Standing with him was Vice President-elect Joe Biden and White House Chief of Staff-designate Rahm Emanuel. He claims that he will focus his efforts of the middle class.

"We need a rescue plan for the middle class that invests in immediate efforts to create jobs and provides relief to families that are watching their paychecks shrink and their life savings disappear," Obama said in his opening statement before taking questions. He then took questions.

He mentioned another reason to act swiftly was because more and more people are becoming unemployed. But he added that we could only have one economic team at a time, as President Bush is still in charge. Unemployment went up dramatically from 6.1 percent in September to 6.5 percent in October. October marked the loss of 240,000 jobs which adds to the previous 9 months of continuous losses in the job market. The total is a staggering 1.2 million jobs since January 2008. The following is a statement read by President-elect Barack Obama before his first press conference since Election Day.

This morning, we woke to more sobering news about the state of our economy. The 240,000 jobs lost in October marks the 10th consecutive month that our economy has shed jobs. In total, we've lost nearly 1.2 million jobs this year, and more than 10 million Americans are now unemployed. Tens of millions of families are struggling to figure out how to pay the bills and stay in their homes. Their stories are an urgent reminder that we are facing the greatest economic challenge of our lifetime, and we must act swiftly to resolve them.

The United States has only one government and one President, and until January 20th of next year, that government is the current Administration. I have spoken to President Bush, and I appreciate his commitment to ensuring that his economic policy team keeps us fully informed as developments unfold.

Immediately after I become President, I will confront this economic crisis head-on by taking all necessary steps to ease the credit crisis, help hardworking families, and restore growth and prosperity.

This morning, I met with members of my Transition Economic Advisory Board, who will help guide the work of my transition team in developing a strong set of policies to respond to this crisis. We discussed several of the most immediate challenges facing our economy and key priorities on which to focus on in the days and weeks ahead:

First, we need a rescue plan for the middle class that invests in immediate efforts to create jobs and provides relief to families that are watching their paychecks shrink and their life savings disappear. A particularly urgent priority is a further extension of unemployment insurance benefits for workers who cannot find work in the increasingly weak economy. A fiscal stimulus plan that will jump-start economic growth is long overdue - and we should get it done.

Second, we must address the spreading impact of the financial crisis on other sectors of our economy: small businesses that are struggling to meet their payrolls and finance their holiday inventories; and state and municipal governments facing devastating budget cuts and tax increases. We must also remember that the financial crisis is increasingly global and requires a global response.

The news coming out of the auto industry this week reminds us of the hardship it faces - hardship that goes far beyond individual auto companies to the countless suppliers, small businesses and communities throughout our nation who depend on a vibrant American auto industry. The auto industry is the backbone of American manufacturing and a critical part of our attempt to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. I would like to see the Administration do everything they can to accelerate the retooling assistance that Congress has already enacted. In addition, I have made it a high priority for my transition team to work on additional policy options to help the auto industry adjust, weather the financial crisis, and succeed in producing fuel-efficient cars here in the United States. I have asked my team to explore what we can do under current law and whether additional legislation will be needed for this purpose.

Third, we will review the implementation of this Administration's financial program to ensure that our government's efforts are achieving their central goal of stabilizing financial markets while protecting taxpayers, helping homeowners and not unduly rewarding the management of financial firms that are receiving government assistance. It is critical that the Treasury work closely with the FDIC, HUD and other government agencies to use the substantial authority they already have to help families avoid foreclosure and stay in their homes.

Finally, as we monitor and address these immediate economic challenges, we will be moving forward in laying out a set of policies that will grow our middle-class and strengthen our economy in the long-term. We cannot afford to wait on moving forward on the key priorities that I identified during the campaign, including clean energy, health care, education and tax relief for middle class families.

75 Days until Inauguration Day - January 20, 2009

Barack Obama has made his very first important decision as President Elect today November 6, 2008. Emanuel was being considered and now has accepted an offer from President-elect Barack Obama to become the White House Chief of Staff in Obama's administration, which begins on January 20, 2009. He has been active in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2003, representing the 5th Congressional District of Illinois. When the Democrats took control of the House, he was elected chairman of the Democratic Caucus. He will be succeeding Josh Bolten. His religious belief is Judaism.

So why did Obama choose him? In Barack Obama's own words, this is what he said... "I announce this appointment first because the chief of staff is central to the ability of a president and administration to accomplish an agenda," Obama said. "And no one I know is better at getting things done than Rahm Emanuel." Further appointments should be immediately forthcoming.. President-Elect Obama will be working closely with his team and also spend some time in a visit with President Bush as he and Michelle has been invited to the Whitehouse to meet the President and the First Lady Laura Bush.
